Introduction: What is cross country?

Cross country is an endurance running sport that offers many different types of athletes a chance to compete in an interscholastic setting. The sport, quite simply, is a 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) running competition usually performed over natural terrain that varies in conditions. The sport is a challenging endurance test which requires athletes have excellent fitness and mental toughness. In each competition, the top 7 runners from each team will affect the overall scoring of the meets.
.
Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I know if cross country is right for me?

The answer is simple. You must enjoy running, since that is pretty much all we do. If you’ve never enjoyed sport and don’t like the aspect of difficult practices performed rain or shine, then it might not be for you.

Are there any requirements to make the team?

No. There is no time standard or fitness requirement for cross country, although it is highly recommended that athletes be able to run at least 2 miles without stopping.  This will lessen the strain and initial shock of the training schedule and enable the athlete to enjoy the sport to its fullest (rather than just trying to survive).

What if I can’t make the first day of practice (or the first week)?

Although missing the first day isn’t a disaster, missing the first week usually is. An athlete will miss out on most of the basic training principles and conditioning, making it difficult to have a successful season. The last day new athletes will be accepted will be Thursday, September 4,  2008.

What equipment do you recommend purchasing before the season starts?

New running shoes (not cross-trainers), black nylon shorts, synthetic socks, stopwatch, and water bottle with a name on it -- these are the staples of any runner’s duffel bag.

How fast do athletes cover the 5 kilometer race?

Times vary greatly, although top finishers generally run around 16-18 minutes, younger runners usually average between 20-25 minutes.

Should I run over the summer?

Absolutely. Check the athletic department webpage for a link to suggested workouts.

What are the requirements to earn a varsity letter?

Athletes are expected to show up for practice everyday (even when injured – these athletes will be given different tasks) and to compete in all the required meets. Each athlete is expected to perform to the best of his ability, respect his teammates and competitors, and strive to contribute to the team environment. There is no performance requirement.
